Music has power not only to cause change but also to prevent it. In this PBS documentary called 'The Night James Brown Saved Boston' singer James Brown has a choice - to give a concert shortly after the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., or not. His choice, his music and his words ultimately may have prevented violent riots in the city of Boston.

James Brown was very effective at focusing on racial pride in his song, "I'm Black and I'm Proud." It calls attention to the civil rights issues of the time: those that can be legislated, but also those issues that are connected to morals and attitudes. It's amazing to see the concert footage of children in the audience dancing to this song!
I'm so pleased it worked out to go to WUMB and hope you'll be able to ask some questions from a contemporary perspective. I'm sorry I can't be with you, but it's shaping up to be a great trip!
